Hectic November

It's been such a busy month! I had loads to do and it all pretty much fell on different days so it meant i could indeed do everything...which was good....but so tiring! I now refer to my sleeping bag as 'ham' because of how it looked when i tired it all up with wool in a tight roll!

Seems i spent a great deal of it travelling! London twice, bath, leeds....

Lots of conventions i was a part of too. I makes me laugh how many times i saw the same people at them! It was funny talking to people and being oh okay, so now we're in leeds....

A very fun month though, meet lots of brilliant people and got lots of cool stuff as well as getting to sell some of my own.

First up was MCM EXPO in london, my collective...The Whatnot Tree...went. SO. MANY.MY LITTLE PONIES.

 Then i went to man my university's the Pittville Press stand at Comica's Comiket also in London the next weekend...

 Then it was time for my personal favourite with The Whatnot Tree again, Thought Bubble in Leeds!

Our table there was really good, better than i had expected to get, we had so much space! As well as wall space for our prints, which usually get buried.

Thought bubble was really fun and i got to go to a lot of interesting talks and meet up with good friends as well.

Since last time, this is a sketchblog after all, i've done quite a bit of life drawings at these various events....

And of course the rest of my time has been going on uni projects!

I Return!

HI!!!

I'm so sorry i haven't blogged in ages! It's been a busy few weeks what with finally moving out and starting the final year of my illustration course. I'm all settled in properly now and one of the best things is our house is right opposite the campus! So i go back for stuff easily if i want and can make my lunch at home then carry it across to the studio! I do get some strange looks when i have my cup of tea with a bowl of chop sticks and noodles XD

Anyway here are some of the sketchs i did on our last drawing day trip at the end of the summer...

So it's back to uni and lots and lots of work. My dad, owning a joinery and being brilliant, found a piece of glass a skip and made me a fancy new light box, here's a pic of my new uni desk space and the light box...

 I was doing the layers for a screen print i then did the next day, from a drawing i did a while back.
This one :) of you wanted to see the original. Below is a scan of one of the finished screen prints. I think they turned out nicely really. I'm going to put the design onto tote bags (when they arrive!) to sell at London's EXPO.

And finally, with the return of uni classes brings the pressure to do lots more for my final project with my characters. I'm working on roughs, concepts and storyboards at the mo :D....

Casual Jazz, Pie and Classy Comics.

Hi Hi,

Just a casual blog post mainly about a few days in London with friends last week :) The theme, it was decided, was of casual Jazz and Pie and included pilgrimages. For me my pilgrimage was to the headquarters of the wondrous NoBrow in Hackney. I love what they do and own a lot of their stuff hehe. Basically it's all lovely printed short comic's and prints and stuff if you didn't know. The other main pilgrimage was a mad rampage then across london to find...pie. Not just any old pie, Pieminister Pie! We fell in love with it both years we were at the 2000 Trees Festival where they have a stand each year, so we wanted to find the actual shop. It was on the Southbank by the Thames and it was lovely :)
We then stayed on the Southbank, but down by the Eye for a few hours watching the street performers and i did some sketchs...

The casual Jazz i mentioned was due to the exhibition was went to on the first night, at the portrait gallery. It was open till 9PM for 'the late shift' and it was too cool for school with jazz and champagne. The exhibition was the BP Portrait Award 2011 and was absolutely brilliant! I really recommend it if your about the place! Crazy skills on display!

FishBowl

I've been having fun drawing two of my characters as kids. It's fun trying to think about how someone would look as a kid and then trying to draw it. I has made me think back to a time when the challenge was to make a person not look deranged let alone like someone or a certain age. Oh it's nice to feel like you are learning :)
Probably need to practice a hell of a lot more at this age thing though. To make someone look older i would probably just add more lines on their face hahah...and that's not quite all there is to it i'm sure!

Anyway i thought i'd upload the sketch and lines from the two pieces i did of my sibling characters Bowl and Fish.
First them as kids...

Then as the age i mainly draw them at...

I named the pieces after two lines from a Noah and the Whale song i love.
I was messing around in photoshop so here they are finished with the titles included as (badly) arranged text...

I Drew A Lot of Birds.

Hello!
Went on a little drawing trip to the Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers in Oxford this week with friends from uni.

Here are some of the quick sketchs i did mainly with my lovely waterproof needle point pen, water soluble pencils and water brush. :D

 I seemed to draw a lot of birds considering the wide variety of things they have there!

I found it weirdly strange to be drawing from objects it front of me again, after spending about a week the days before running round in my imagination. I've been working on sorting my major project out that will take me to the end of my degree this coming june. I don't want to jinx anything.....but....it may be starting to materialise....

One of the things i'm doing is filling a sketchbook entirely with the basic starting points/ narrative/ themes of some 'Stories to Tell'. It's pretty fun and i'm trying not to get too precious/ self conscious/ picky about it since i think that's when the best ideas form :)
I cut and pasted a few of my favourite examples of some cells to show what the whole book will look like eventually!...

Cotsworld Wildlife Park

Hi all,

Back with said sketches i did yesterday at the Wildlife Park near Burford.
It was a fun day with sunny weather. We had ice creams, rode a train and saw lots of nice animals. I also became part of the attraction, sat under various trees, as small french children hoarded around myself and towered above me and my sketchbook XD hah hahh.
Adults were less scary and asked to look and were less obvios about their watching :D

Lets start with a blurry drawing of a burrowing owl.... (i apologise now for the quality of the photos.)
